Haanduk, a film on insurgency, to showcase in Mami Mumbai festival

‘Haanduk’ a film by young Assamese filmmaker Jaicheng Jai Dohutia has been selected to be screened in the Mami Mumbai Film Festival from October 20. The film based on a true story on insurgency will also compete in the international completion category.

“It’s a great thing to happen for the entire team of Haanduk and or the state as well. Our film has been selected from more than 170 films from across the country,” Dohutia said.

Haanduk made under Mayamara Productions is one of the 11 films that will be screened in the ‘India Gold’ segment.

The 18th edition of the festival will witness films of all genres from across the globe for competitions and screenings.

Dohutia said that the film will also compete with other international films in the competition.

Haanduk which means a hidden corner depicts the plight of Heramoni, mother of untraced extremist Mukti. She performs his last rites of a dead body thinking to be his son. But later, the outfit could not confirm his dead. She continues to live in confusion.

It will be a world premiere for the film when it is screened in the festival.

“I read the story some nine years back and wanted to give it a reel touch. Finally it happened and I’m happy the way it is getting started. I’m hopeful for better days ahead,” said the director.

Interestingly, the protagonist played by Bandoi Chetia has never acted or involved in any kind of performing arts.

“She belongs to a very poor jobless family comprising her husband, son and daughter-in-law. Every day the entire family goes out in search of daily work for wages. She had never gone to school. Her mother died young. The fifty odd-years of her rugged journey in life has taught her a lot and made her very bold and strong. We really liked working her. It was a different experience altogether,” said Dohutia.
