Lucky escape: Druk Air flight broken by hailstorm over Garo Hills

It was a lucky escape for 90 passengers onboard a Druk Air flight from Paro (in Bhutan) to Guwahati as the flight hit by strong hailstorm in its final approach. The KB140 Druk Air flight was on its way from Paro in Bhutan to Guwahati airport when it was hit by a heavy hailstorm over Garo Hills of Meghalaya.

The pilots managed to make a safe landing despite damages to the aircraft’s nose and right engine. The further assessment of damage is currently being done by the aviation experts.

Turbulent weather in northeast India continues even as reports of heavy hailstorm and cloudburst came from various places. At least one person was killed, several injured, and hundreds of houses damaged when heavy thunderstorms and hailstorms – Nor’wester, locally called Bordoisila – lashed Assam and other Northeastern states on Saturday, with power transmission affected in many districts.

One person was killed during thunderstorm in Hailakandi district in southern Assam, officials in the Assam State Disaster Management Authority control room in Guwahati said on Saturday evening. “Reports of damage to houses are still being collected and compiled,” a control room official said.

In the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, sudden cloudburst on Friday led to severe crisis as power transmission tripped. The main roads were cut off owing to landslides.

In Guwahati, several localities including Anilnagar, Tarunnagar, Panjabari, RG Barua Road were inundated due to flash floods.
