Pride East Entertainments vows to promote muga silk of Assam

Christened to promote the handlooms of Assam, Guwahati-based Pride East Entertainments announced an event, Golden Threads: Dreams in a Cocoon, with the theme that ancient craft forms and the glamorous fashion industry can co-exist in harmony. The event is an effort to preserve and promote the ancient golden thread of Assam – Muga.

During the reign of the Ahom rulers, Muga was considered a class statement, and it was a mandate for higher officials of the kingdom to wear clothes made only from Muga silk. Many Muga looms in those days were under royal supervision and hence, Muga was also known as the Rajaghoria (royal) loom.

“Golden Threads: Dreams in a Cocoon will be a fashion show displaying ethnic couture at par with modern fashion trends, yet preserving the essence and richness of the handlooms of Assam. This initiative would introduce the rich heritage of Assamese handloom industry to the top of the line fashion fraternities of the country,” said Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, chairman and managing director at Pride East Entertainments. Sharma further added that the entire aim is to preserve and promote the Muga silk which is on the verge of extinction and give it a new lease of life.

On October 19, the event at Vivanta by Taj, will showcase a collection by Delhi-based fashion designer Samant Chauhan, who has mostly worked on hand woven Indian textiles. Chauhan’s work has been admired as simple, clean-cut, and basic. The label, ‘Samant Chauhan’ today has come a long way selling at several high-profile stores globally.

The evening will start with an introduction of the rich heritage of handlooms of the state, supported by an AV presentation. Following this, the traditional attires of Assam made with muga will be showcased. Further, Chauhan’s unique collection will be presented before the audience.
